JEITA presents domestic home electronics shipments decline in November; first time in 6 months.
DVD recorders triple Y-O-Y
The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) presented that domestic shipments of electronics goods intended for household use have declined during November 2003. The total value of shipments was 99.7% of the same period from last year, or 201.9 billion yen; this is the first time in 6 months a decline has been reported.
Image-related equipment shipments held strong at 129 billion yen, or 102.3% of the previous year’s period. But LCD color televisions and DVDs lagged behind.Sound-related equipment shipments were valued 21.4 billion yen, or a drop to 84% of last year’s value. Car A/V component shipments were valued at 101% of the previous year, or 51.5 billion yen. This is the first gain in 15 straight months.
Color televisions (CRT, LCD, and PDP) saw their second negative month; 81.8% the previous year, represented by 767,000 units shipped. Plasma television shipments, however, were 160.7% last year. PDP saw an increase to 106.6% of 2002’s value. CRT dropped to 70.2% of the previous year’s amount. CRT, LCD, and PDP’s composition ratio became 73.4:22.7:3.9.
DVD video continued to grow to 141.3% of 2002. DVD/VTR combination units, and internal HDD recording equipment was favorable; recording/playback devices represent 297.7% of last year’s value. This equates to 251,000 units shipped. The ratio of DVD videos to DVD recorders is almost half. VTRs experienced a decline to 54% of the previous year’s shipments; this year 218,000 units were shipped.
Finally, video camera units averaged about the same as last year, and video projectors continued a drastic decrease.

Domestic FTTH (Fiber To The Home) subscribers hit 800,000 – says Ministry of Telecommunications survey
The Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications presented on the 26th about internet connection service users. They have said that, by the end of November, the number of domestic FTTH subscribers reached 800,000. Also, the number of domestic DSL subscribers has reached 10,000,000.
At the end of November, FTTH subscribers numbered 815,402; this is an increase of 59,191 subscribers from the previous month’s 756,211. But, September saw an increase of 80,405 new subscribers, and October 67,761. There is a declining trend from these two months.
As was announced on the 12th, DSL subscribers totaled 9,911,306. This is an increase of 320,957 from the previous month. If it were to continue at this pace, it will be more than 10,000,000 before the end of 2003.
Other lines included cable television, which hit 2,428,000 subscribers; an increase of 52,000 from the previous month. Also, the number of cellular phone subscribers increased by 412,000, bringing it to a total of 67,207,000. Subscribers to dial up connections decreased by 95,000; bringing it to a total of 19,260,000.
