Yet another Sony product for you tonight - active desktop speakers which have an optical input.
They have an optical input, but don't expect to be able to connect these to your DVD player too easily; they don't have an integrated decoder.
One of the primary advantages of optical audio connections is being able to deliver encoded digital signals from one device to another with no quality loss. So with these speakers, you get the "no quality loss" part, but you lose the "encoded" part. For you, this means things like Dolby Digital and DTS aren't supported. But still, I use an optical connection to get from my PC to my surround sound system, and though I can't do encoded signals, the quality gain alone is very worth it.
Sony will release the "SRS-ZP1000D" active speakers for the PC with an optical input, on October 21st. The price is 24,150 yen.
These are active speakers with a total 50 watts output, and contain a 1-bit digital amplifier. In addition to an analog stereo mini jack, an optical audio input support 96kHz/24bit signals is also furnished. When used with the digital amplifier, the playback of clear sound with little noise is possible.
The two speakers are two-way, containing both 100mm diameter subwoofer and 25mm diameter tweeters. The enclosure is bass reflect. The driver unit uses theta-type magnetic circuitry.
Included are "music mode" and "movie mode" tone quality modes, which can be chosen to match the source. The design of the speakers use a clear panel. They are intended for use on top of a desk or table, and the enclosures point slightly upwards.
The external dimensions are 140 x 203 x 330mm (W x D x H). The weight of the left speaker (which houses the amplifier) is 4.5kg, and the weight speaker is 2.8kg.
