Chuubu Telecommunication, otherwise known as CTC, will begin offering wireless access via their "BroadDive" service. It uses optical fibers which deliver data to wireless modules, and employs the 802.11a standard. But not the standard 802.11a standard, apparently. Details inside.
Chuubu Telecommunication (CTC) will begin offering their wireless access service, "BroadDive," on January 15th, 2004. It uses the IEEE 802.11a standard, with a maximum throughput of 54Mbps. The monthly cost, including equipment rental fee, will be 4,280 yen.
BroadDive uses CTC's self-constructed optical fiber network, and delivers internet service (max 54Mbps) to one's house and surrounding areas via an antenna. However, due to reception issues, when comparing high and low venues, the high areas have a slower speed.
Although it is based on the 802.11a standard, since the inside and outside frequencies vary, 802.11a devices currently marketed for indoor use cannot be used. Also, the 54Mbps wireless is not just for exclusive use of one user; it is shared by multiple users.
Service is available in Setoshi City, Aichi Prefecture, and will begin on January 15th, 2004. The monthly service cost will be 3,290 yen and the equipment rental 990 yen, totalling to 4,280 yen. This includes a mail account up to 10MB, and forwarding service. There initial setup fees of handling add up to 3,000 yen, and there is a 9,980 yen installation fee for standard apartments. BroadDive also offers a service for individual structures, which has a construction cost of 14,980-24,980 yen.
BroadDive is also running a campaign to get new members until the end of March 2004. Users who apply for BroadDrive during this period will have their handling fee waived, and there will be no monthly charges during the campaign period; initial costs are also halved.
