Everyone's favorite blank media maker is the first to announce DVD-R media supporting CPRM.
What's CPRM?
Just ignore the part that says "except for DVD-R" because as you can see that's no longer entirely true.
Taiyou Yuuden Corporation will release DVD-R media supporting CPRM on November 1st. Three packages will be available: 5-pack, 10-pack (jewel case), and 10-pack (spindle case). They are all Open Price. The estimated retail price for the 5 pack is a bit less than 1,500 yen, and the 10 pack 3,000 yen.
These are 8x DVD-R media which support the "CPRM" copyright protection technology used in the DVD standard. Each CPRM-supporting disc features a "Media ID" and "MKB (Media Key Block)", which will encode video data using these features. Media IDs and MKBs are written to these DVD-Rs.
Although CPRM supporting media had previously been restricted to DVD-RW and DVD-RAM, this Taiyou Yuuden media is a first for DVD-R. Furthermore, recording digital broadcasts to the disc requires a DVD recorder supporting DVD-Rs with CPRM. Currently, there are no CPRM supporting recorders on sale, but it is expected that these be introduced from various companies in the near future.
