I haven't heard much about xDs in a while, so I kind of thought these things fell off the face of the earth. I guess not.

Olympus Corporation and Fuji Picture Film Corporation announced on the 27th that they have developed the first 1GB xD-Picture Card media. Both companies plan to release products in the Spring of 2005. The price has not yet been decided.

Using a high-capacity technology called "MLC ( Multi Level Cell)" that stores multiple bits in a single memory cell, the small-sized card has a 1GB capacity. According to the companies, this development allows for a capacity of up to 8GB.

The product name, for Olympus, will be "M-XD1GM." For Fujifilm, it will be "xD-Picture Card M1GB." The "M" in "M 1GB" represents the usage of MLC technology.

Furthermore, Olympus has announced that compatibility with existing products "may require a firmware upgrade, or not be supported at all."

xD-Picture Card has been used as a recording medium in Olympus and Fujifilm digital cameras since September of 2000. The largest capacity up until now was 512MB, and on the 27th, the bulk rate for a 512MB media was a bit less than 20,000 yen.

Hehe, it's funny, because we spaniards use "xD" as the smiley for your "LOL". So everytime I see an xD card I can't help smiling :). Why "xD"? Well, it's an a-la-southpark smiley, "x" for the eyes and "D" for the mouth... yeah that's it, I don't know why it got so popular, but nowadays everyone uses it.

"xD" is so popular between young people in Spain, that there's even T-Shirts featuring it... just look http://www.ropafriki.com/camisetas/netfreaks/xD/
