This new JVC projector can do 4096 x 2160 dots of resolution - four times Full HD.
Holy crapola.

Japan Victor Corporation has announced the development of the "4K2K D-ILA Device" D-ILA panel implementing an 8.85MP resolution (4096 x 2160 dots, making it four times Full HD), and the "4K2K D-LIA Projector" using the same panel.

D-ILA (Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier) is one type of reflective LCD (LCOS = Liquid Crystal on Silicon) developed by the company. JVC developed the 7.86MP (3840 x 2048 dot) "Early 4K2K D-ILA Device" in the Fall of 2000, and a research goal was established in March of 2001 to supply a projector containing the same device. It was also used for the standardization of the 4K specification being driven by the "Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)," which consists of Hollywood movie studio members.

The new device uses a next-generation manufacturing process to produce a pixel pitch of 9.5μm. While it is the same 1.7" size, it not only conforms to the pixel count of 4096 x 2160 dots as established by DCI, but also greatly improves upon the task of being a first device. The reflection rate is 78%, the contrast ratio 5,000:1, and the pixel pitch is 9.5μm. The response time is 10ms.

Because of both a high aperture ratio of over 92% and an independent increased pixel reflection structure, a high light usage ratio of over 75% has been achieved. Also, thanks to a reconsideration of circuitry inside the element, noise such as crosstalk, reflection, and ghosting has been drastically reduced.

On the 4K2K D-ILA projector, a contrast ratio of 1500:1 has been achieved. The lamp is 2000W, and has a brightness of 8000 ANSI lumens. This projector will be on exhibition at the "CEATEC JAPAN 2004" convention to take place in Makuhari Messe beginning October 5th. Also, a 4K2K projector will be used to project (yeah I know) a video with a 4-fold resolution at the "Super High Vision" demonstration to be held by NHK at the "Aichi World Fair" to start in 2005. A video with 4,320 scan lines will be projected onto a 600 inch screen.
