I didn't expect to see this for quite a while, but oh well. Taiwan's MediaTek Inc. has announced that they are developing a front-end LSI with support for Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, DVD, and CD. That's right, no need to compromise o­n next-generation optical medias!

Maybe burning PS3 games will be a reality soon enough

Taiwan's MediaTek Inc. has announced that they are in the process of developing a front-end LSI for use in next generation optical disc equipment. They plan to begin mass production in 2006.

There are two types of LSI planned for commercialization by the company. There is a product type featuring support for Blu-Ray Disc, DVD, and CD medias, as well as o­ne that supports Blu-Ray Disc, HD DVD, DVD, and CD medias. They are first proceeding with the development of a Blu-Ray Disc LSI, and are now in the stages of simulations and evaluations using FPGAs. Finally, they will create a second chip for an RF amp and digital signal processing.

Regarding the product supporting 4 media types including HD DVD, there is still a possibility that this may change depending o­n market demands for HD DVD. While the development of it may take slightly longer, both of the products are planned to begin production in 2006.
