For those of you that don't know, contrast ratio describes the difference between the whitest whites and blackest blacks a screen can display.
The LCD I'm using right now has a contrast ratio of 250:1 - so 6000:1 is a shitload, needless to say.
Sony held a demonstration of an unannounced next-generation projector at the "Sony Dealer Convention 2004" going on from September 16th.
This is the successor to the company's "Cineo" series of home-usage projectors. It uses a newly developed Sony-made 0.73" widescreen SXGA (1280 x 720) LCD panel, and supports the display of 720p.
The case design has been changed greatly from the existing Cineo series. It gives a calm atmosphere with its two-tone (silver close to champange gold and black) coloring, and has been reborn with a body to match the interiors of living rooms.
Included in this model is a mechanism that will adjust the opening and closing of the iris realtime in response to brightness signals, and though the device uses an LCD panel, it has a contrast ratio minimum of 1000:1 and maximum of 6000:1. Though this system is the same as is included on Matsushita's TH-AE700, the point here is that this reference model features a much higher contrast ratio - 6000:1 - which is generally the average for DLP devices (the TH-AE700 is 2000:1).
This new model is expected to be in the price range of current Cineo series projectors, at around 350,000 yen. Though there have been no official announcements about release date or price, they are expected to be in time for the holiday season.
