Those ultra-creative gentlemen down at Japan Victor Corporation have finally allowed that LCD screen to come OFF of your headunit, and be attached to a cradle in the back seat.
JVC will release the "Road Theater" series of DVD/CD receivers during early November. The price for the model including a 7" widescreen LCD costs 210,000 yen.
This "KD-PAV7000" system consists of a DVD/CD receiver, and a 7" color LCD (in-dash type). Though it is the "in-dash" type, the monitor can be removed from the headunit, and be attached to a cradle in the rear (or wherever). Also, JVC will be releasing just the screen - the "KV-MAV7001" - and both front and rear screens can be used at the same time.
The cradle and receiver are connected with a special cable, which supplies not only power, but video and audio that are played by the receiver are sent via composite. Because of this configuration, both the front and rear seats are linked, and they cannot display two different images.
Using an independent audio system, this setup allows for the rear seat to watch a DVD, while the front can listen to FM/AM radio. The cradle also has two headphone outputs, so audio can be listened to without bother others in the car. Furthermore, with the purchase of the sold-separately "KV-C1000" TV tuner, TV can also be watched. It is operated by touch-panel.
Supported audio formats are Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Progressive II. Both composite and analog audio outputs are furnished, as well as one 5.1ch analog output. Two composite and analog audio inputs are provided. The amplifier has a maximum output of 50W x 4ch and 35W x 1ch. It contains an FM/AM tuner.
Apart from being able to playback DVD-Video, the drive can also play MP3 files stored on a DVD-R/RW or CD-R/RW. A 6 pattern "i-DSP" audio positioning setting can be used, as well as the 5 band "i-EQ" equalizer.
