Hopefully a new feature here at TechJapan, and hopefully to expand to include graphs and all that. Just charts with simple numbers and "top lists" for now, but hey, it's a start.

If you can think of any creative way to aggregate this data in particular, let me know. I guess the "Weekly Ranking" won't work so well, because GfK jumps around with the product categories from week to week.

For the "No. 1," would you guys be interested in a weekly chart that shows the breakdown of how many products are held by what companies? I'll try this, and throw something up in a minute here.

Let me know if you think of any other ways I can visually represent this data.

I guess what I don't like about this idea, though, is the fact that it compares companies on a level they should really be compared at. Does NTT DoCoMo make air conditioners? No. It doesn't quite help to compare NTT DoCoMo (or another company with a specific market) with other companies that offer a wider variety of products. It's just that I would be comparing the companies as though they were competitors all across the board, when this is certainly not the case.

Re the TVs, that katakana "brown" is not brown the colour but "braun" , the German surname of the guy who developed the first CRT. See here for more info:

Good info - thanks for providing it. A few ideas/thoughts:

1. I'm not sure how interested people will be in some of the info e.g. top-selling postcard software etc. I'd suggest limiting the info you translate to just the more popular stuff - TVs, computers etc.

2. It would be good if there were links to product pages for each product listed. Since the product code is listed, shouldn't be too hard to automate this. You could also link to current prices at www.kakaku.com where available.

3. If you were going to include graphs, I'd also look at automating these as it would pretty time-consuming to generate them manually. You can use something like JpGraph (http://www.aditus.nu/jpgraph/index.php) to generate the charts.

Thanks for the correction and suggestions, sar.

I'll certainly cut out the information nobody needs. When I was doing these statistics, I kinda felt like I was wasting my time with some of the stuff.

And in regards to automation, I don't think it's doable by me. Being that this site runs PostNuke, my options for what goes into each post are pretty limited - it's basically only what I can do with HTML. Since I don't have the expertise to implement complicated PHP systems like this jpGraph into PostNuke, I'd be hard pressed to get things to link automatically or whatnot. Still, I will see about dropping links to some things in the future, albeit manually.
