Hold on to your hats, ladies and gentlemen....Samsung and Sony have completed the panel production facility for their new S-LCD company. We first reported on S-LCD, a joint venture of the two companies, back in March.

Samsung Electronics Korea and Sony held an event on the 15th to commemorate the completion of Korea's S-LCD panel manufacturing facility and related facilities. It was held in Tan-jong.  Construction of manufacturing equipment began on the same day, and the company aims for a monthly production of 60,000 panels per month by the end of the first half of 2005.

S-LCD is a jointly managed company established on April 26th by Samsung Electronics and Sony, with half investment from each, for the production of amorphous TFT LCD panels. Equipment for the manufacture of 7th generation "mother glass" with a 1,870mm x 2,200mm substrate size will be brought in, and the factory will supply panels for the LCD TVs of both companies.

The panel construction facility is 4 stories, with a total square meterage of 320,000m2. The printing module building, containing means for producing backlights and circuitry, is also 4 stories, with a total square meterage of 150,000m2.

Sou Khan Lee (sorry dude), president of Samsung Electronics' LCD division, commented by saying, "we are hoping that with the cooperation of both companies, we can read the LCD TV market. We would like to be a leader in standardization of next generation glass substrates and LCD TV size, and further strengthen our position at #1 in the world."

Ken Kutaragi, Sony's vice president and COO said, "TVs are one of the most important categories to Sony. By adding S-LCD manufactured panels to our flat TV strategy core, our TV strategy will be all the more stable."
