What was once done in two chips should be able to be done in one.
The dual modes are W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS.
NTT DoCoMo announced that they would jointly develop a dual-mode LSI chip, supporting both W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS standards, along with America's Texas Instruments.
DoCoMo plans on adding this new dual-mode supporting chip to FOMA units, which will help promotion and lowering costs. Although Renasas Technology is currently developing the same thing, according to DoCoMo, "the technologies owned by each enterprise have different features. We will cooperate with this as out strong point," said DoCoMo, who is apparently seeking out new makers for cooperation.
TI plans on investing 5.5 billion yen in the 2 years before the end of 2005. This amount of investment is about 1.5 billion yen less than that of Renasas. DoCoMo and TI plan on fusing the technologies each company possesses, and are aiming for a low cost, high-functionality, low power consumption chipset.
