Sony has announced detailed specifications and a concrete release date of the much anticipated VAIO type R series. We first reported on the type R series back in May.

Sony announced on the 14th that they will release the upper level "VGC-RA70P" model and the "VGC-RA60" series of the "VAIO type R" high-end desktop PCs on June 19th. At the time of announcement in June, Sony had originally said the computers would be release "this summer."

Information about the previously un-presented chipset was also announced. The chipset will be an Intel 915P Express, the CPU an Intel Pentium IV 550 (3.40GHz), and the video card a RADEON X600 XT.

Although the chipset and video chip were announced at Computex Taipei 2004, the CPU has not been announced by Intel, which is rather odd. Since the chipset is an Intel 915P Express, the CPU supports the new "LGA775" socket.

Previously unannounced expansion bays have also been presented. The type R will have 3.5" bays x 4 (2 free on RA70P, 3 free on RA60), and 5" bays x 2 (0 free). Furthermore, when four hard drives are use, the floppy drive needs to be removed.
