Victor has released details of several plasma and LCD TVs with "GENESSA" intelligent image processing. They will be available in June. Read on for photos.

Nicknamed "EXE", these TVs feature the latest image enhancing technology called "GENESSA" and sound enhancing system "KIKIRAKU" (literally "easy listening").

GENESSA and KIKIRAKU

GENESSA employs a 32-bit CPU for gamma correction ("intelligent gamma") and color enhancement ("color creation"). The real-time, frame-by-frame, 16-stage gamma curve tuning system enhances brightness and contrast, thus restoring the natural details of the image.

KIKIRAKU performs dynamic range compression on voices to increase the volume of speech for easier listening, and soften high-pitched sounds that make you uncomfortable. This helps prevent the situation where a very loud commercial follows a quiet program or news broadcast.

Another feature of KIKIRAKU, probably only useful for Japanese programs, is a talk speed modulation system called "Slow Talk", co-developed with the NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories. The audio is stored in a buffer and played back at a slower speed to fill long gaps of silence between 2 news items. This feature is mostly aimed at elderly viewers.

PD-42DV50/35DV50

These are the 42" and 35" plasma models. They have a resolution of 852x480, and includes BS/110CS (satellite) and terrestrial digital TV tuners that are pretty much standard on Japanese TVs. These models are fitted with an "E.E. sensor" that detects room lighting and automatically adjusts image brightness. Other nifty features include "3rd generation GRT (ghost reduction)", "noise clear", G-GUIDE (an electronic program guide), and "T-Navi" (Internet for TVs). Oblique cone speakers with a subwoofer and Active Hyper Base (AHB) are used for high power bass playback.

You get 1 component (YUV), 1 D4, 3 S-video, 4 composite, 1 analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin), 2 i.LINK and 1 center channel input connectors, and 1 monitor, 1 optical digital audio, and headphone and subwoofer output connectors. There is also an SD memory card slot for viewing JPEG images directly on the TV. PD-42DV50 measures 1,045x116x729mm and weighs 38.8kg, and PD-35DV50 measures 907x123x634mm and weighs 31.5kg. Power consumption is 333W and 274W respectively. Expected prices are 580,000 yen and 500,000 yen (roughly $5,000 and $4,400).

LT-32LC50B/S, LT-26LC50B/S

These 32"/26" LCD TVs come in 2 colors: black and silver. They are capable of reaching a resolution of 1,366x768 with 170-degree viewing angle in all directions. Brightness is 500cd/m2. GENESSA and KIKIRAKU are of course available, so are digital TV tuners, 3rd-gen GRT, E.E. sensor, G-GUIDE and other features available on their plasma brothers. These models also have oblique cone speakers but no subwoofer.

1 YUV, 2 S-video, 1 D4, 3 composite and 1 analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) are available. 2 i.LINK and 1 optical digital audio output connectors are also available, but SD memory card slot seems to be missing. The stand can be tilted 7 degrees up, 3 degrees down, and turned 20 degrees sideways. The 32" model, LT-32LC50B/S measures 834x108x632mm, weighs 23kg, and consumes 166W of power. 703x107x555mm, 19kg and 138W for the 26" model, LT-26LC50B/S. Expected price for LT-32LC50B/S is 500,000 yen and for LT-26LC50B/S, 400,000 yen (roughly $4,400 and $3,500).
