There's three phones:
-D506i from Mitsubishi
-F506i from Fujitsu
-N506i from NEC

Like always, there are advantages and disadvantages for each unit.
Plenty more details and images inside.

-D506i

The "D506i" is a flip phone from Mitsubishi which supports horizontal picture taking. It has a Super CCD Honeycomb Camera with an effective resolution of 1MP (2MP recorded). The camera on the hinge section of the phone is identical to that on the D505i and D505iS, and is used for when the phone is open, such as taking pictures of oneself - then when the phone is closed, pictures can be taken horizontally using the main camera. on the D506i, there is a door device on the reverse side of the phone, so that the camera function will start when the door is opened.

Also, this phone features the "voice shutter" function, which will release the shutter on a certain pre-recorded voice command. This is so to prevent situations such as those when the shutter button is accidentally pressed on small, light cellular phones. Further, the the recording of this voice command needs to be done in a quiet environment - since the announcement event was not so quiet, there wasn't any voice recording going on.

The main display is a 2.2", QVGA, 262,144 color TFD LCD, and the subdisplay is a 1.5", 160 x 120 dot, 65,536 color TFT LCD. on the larger-than-usual subdisplay, camera image display, and mail functions, etc. can be displayed on the menu. Since the subdisplay can now operature more functions, there are also now more buttons on the sides of the phone. Another functions is the "voice recorder" function, which can record up to 174 minutes of voice. Memory Stick Duo is also supported as an external memory.

Of the phones presented at this event, it was felt as though the D506i has been the most "brushed up" since the 505i series. When a question mark comes up on the screen, and the button on the side of the phone is pressed, an operational guide will be displayed. The main memory, which has been expanded to 20MB, now uses tabbed navigation for its folders - and switching to data stored on the Memory Stick Duo has become much easier. Also, it has a simple menu display option.

The continuous idle time of the phone is 500 hours, and the continuous talk time is 135 minutes. The size is 105 x 49 x 23mm (H x W x T), and the weight is 115g. Three body colors are available: Earth Bronze, Egg White, and Andorian Blue.

-F506i

The "F506i" is an i-Mode flip phone from Fujitsu that has a 2.04MP camera that supports an auto focus function. 2.04MP is currently the highest resolution of any DoCoMo units.

When the shutter button on the side of the phone is pressed halfway, a box will display on the screen making it easy for the user to determine whether or not the objects pictured in this box are in focus. Also, the phone has an "easy operation" function which allows for frequently used functions to be accessible at the touch of only one button.

One "brush-up" of this phone is the fingerprint verification function - it features the same slide-type verifications as the F900i. Also, security codes from 4 to 8 digits are support, and in addition to having a stronger security function, it also has the ability to automatically go to dial-lock mode when the phone is closed.

The main display is a 2.4", QVGA, 262,144 color TFT LCD, and the subdisplay is a 1.1", 96 x 72 dot, 4,096 color organic EL display. For external memory, miniSD cards are supported.

Continuous idle time on this unit is 510 hours, and continuous talk time is 150 minutes. The size is 103 x 49 x 23mm (H x W x T), and the weight is 116g. Three body colors are also available for this phone: Coral Blue, Princess Pink, and Surf White.

-N506i

The "N506i" is an i-Mode phone of NEC make, which features a "reverse style" mechanism that can rotate on two axes, and a 1.3MP CCD camera. It can be closed even with the main display exposed, and functions such as i-Mode and mail can be used with the "shuttle key."

The display is a 345 x 240 (making it larger than QVGA), 2.4", 262,144 color TFT LCD. The camera is closer to the middle of the phone, rather than the outside, and this phone also has the "TV output function" which can allow for users to display their recorded pictures/movies on a TV. The connection to a TV is done with a special earphone style port. However, the cable to connect the phone to the TV will not be included standard - it is planned as an option.

Also, the "Hands Free Mail" function allows users to read their mail by the phone responding to voice. Furthermore, the "surround function" is the same as that on the N505i, meaning there are speakers on all sides of the directional keys.

Another feature is the "access reader" fuction which will recognize Japanese names and mail addresses in images recorded by the camera. When I tried reading my own name, of the two times I tried, the first time the phone read my name as "Shinnichi Keibou," though the second time it got it right as "Tsuda Keibou." However, since the camera itself is closer to the middle of the phone, it will probably take some getting used to. A miniSD card slot is also provided.

The continuous idle time is 420 hours, and the continuous talk time is 150 minutes. The size is 104 x 49 x 24mm (H x W x T), and the weight is 126g. Three body colors are available: Lupinus Pink, Iris Blue, and Camomile White.

Please note that the part in the text recognition where I used the word "I," I was translating the article as it appeared. The author of the Japanese article was talking about his experiences with the text recognition function. I don't know if I got his name right either - often, Japanese names vary in reading, even for the same Kanji - sometimes the easiest way to find out how to say someone's name is to just ask them.

I particularly like the rotating screen.
Also, I'd like to call attention to the text recognition of the F506i - I think it's funny how the Japanese market is finding new uses for cameras. It seems to me that they're discovering how little people actually use them...yet there's still a market for them. So, instead of making phones without cameras, what do they do? Simply add more functions to the cameras. This is evidenced by QR codes. I'm sure we'll see other functions come along.
