Say goodbye to low quality audio o­n video cameras and voice recorders. Oki is introducing an LSI which allows for audio recording/playback at essentially the same quality as CDs.

Oki Electric Industry Corporation will begin sample shipments in June of the "ML2308," a o­ne-chip digital amplifier LSI which drive microphone amps, headphones, speakers, etc.. Large volume shipment is scheduled to begin in September, and the sample price is 1,000 yen. They are aiming for a monthly production of 300,000 chips.

The MC2308 is a LSI assumed to be inserted in digital video cameras, voice recorders, etc. It features a 1bitΔΣ AD/DA convertor, which is said to allow for recording/playback of audio quality similar to that of a CD.

Furthermore, the LSI also supports an ADPCM compression format specially developed by ADPCM, as well as μ-Law PCM, a format included standard with Windows. It is also suitable for recording/playback for long periods of time. The signal/noise ratio during recording/playback is 88dB. When used as a digital amplifier in headphone and speaker's drive devices, it has an output power efficiency of 80% - more than twice of previous models.

Also included are command functions such as fast and slow play. The package is a 48-pin QFN, and the package size is 7.2mm x 7.2mm (H x W).

Furthermore, the audio signal processing part and speaker driving digital amp parts developed for the ML2308 are, as a function module for the LSI's IP, planned o­n supporting functions included for ASIC.
