Well obviously it's got an enclosure making it bigger than 1.8 inches, but it's still small compared to other external hard drives I've seen.

IO Data Device Corporation will release the "HDMX-U40," a portable HD with a 40GB, 1.8" drive inside, in the back part of April. The price is 34,000 yen.

The HDMX is a compact HD with an aluminium body of 76 x 83.5 x 16.2mm (W x D x H). It supports USB 2.0, and operates off bus power. Apart from using a fluid-bearing type drive (thereby making it quieter), it also features a write protect switch. Supported operating systems are Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP, as well as Mac OS 9.0.x - OS X 10.3.

ITmedia likes to write really short articles - I'll update this with the information from Impress Watch (their articles are generally much more complete) when it comes out, if someone wants me to.
