Turbo Linux and Cyberlink announced o­n April 15th that they are planning to get Linux more involved in the Multimedia Desktop environment. o­ne of their plans includes the strategy to bundle CyberLink's "Power DVD" software with Turbo Linux.

Turbo Linux and Cyberlink announced on April 15th that they are planning to get Linux more involved in the Multimedia Desktop environment. One of their plans includes the strategy to bundle CyberLink's "Power DVD" software with Turbo Linux.

Until now it has been technically illegal to play DVD'd protected by CSS (Contents Scramble System) in Linux, but once this package is released that will no longer be the case. Now consumers will be able to legally play DVD's on the Linux operating system.

The "Power DVD" series is basically DVD software for playing movies, music, and other DVD media on desktop and laptop PC's. It uses advanced Video/Audio technology, and this will be the first time that OEM will be supported on the Linux operating system. With this new product, the increased multimedia capabilities of Linux should help it to penetrate the Desktop OS market even further.

Also, CyberLink is working with a hardware vendor in Taiwan to develop "PowerCinema - for Linux". This should be available with TurboLinux 10 Desktop, and Turbolinux次期製品版 (jikiseihinban). Which I think means, the next version of TurboLinux.

"PowerCinema" is a software package which specializes in playing DVDs and music. The software aims to handle all types of Multimedia to be an all-in-one PC home theatre. The Windows version of this software is already included in the OEM's of Dell and Acer and other hardware vendors. The Linux version should debut in the "LinuxWorldExpo/Tokyo 2004" in June, and then begin to be released with hardware vendors around the country.
