This isn't the first time I've seen headphones which supposedly have support for 5.1ch audio, but this IS the first time I've seen the like this. They have these flaps that fold out, and on each flap is a speaker. I wonder how well these actually work...
The "Rare Mono (stuff) Shop" operated by Thanko Limited Company began selling USB headphones with "wing-type" speakers on the 8th. The name of the product is "5D1 USB HeadPhone," and the price is 8,379 yen.
Not only can these be used as normal USB headphones, they feature "wing-style speakers." The "wings" spread from the headphone part of the each earpiece, and with two wings on the left and right sides in addition to the headphone itself, there is a total of 6 independently driver channels. Since these headphones have 6 speakers between the main unit and wing speakers, they are said to be "playback intense 5.1ch realistically."
The left and right (2ch) main units each have an output of 100mW each, and the wing speakers (4ch) have an output of 50mW each. The playback frequency range of the headphones is 20Hz ~ 20kHz. They weigh under 100g. About halfway down the cable is a control unit, where users can adjust the volume, and operate the mute and effect on/off functions.

"WinDVD" DVD playback software is included. It is also packaged with software to test 6ch playback. Supported operating systems are Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, and XP.

The product specifications don't mention anything about Dolby Digital, DTS or any of that, so I suspect that the effect is virtual. I doubt there is an integrated DD/DTS decoder... I would probably feel like a moron wearing these. Still, an interesting idea. |
