Matsushita Electrical Industries Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, and Sony Corporation have announced the Blu-ray ROM production COULD be as low as that of DVD-ROM production.
Matsushita Electrical Industries Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, and Sony Corporation have announced that their forecast is that the Blu-ray disc ROM standard, "BD-ROM Disc," could have a manufacturing cost around that of a DVD-ROM.
According to the three companies, a single layer layer BD-ROM disc could have the same disc per disc manufacturing cost as current DVD discs do.
"In order for BD software to spread among the contents software industry, the manufacturing cost of BD is an exceedingly important element. Another important point is compatibility with current DVDs, and protection technologies preventing illegal copying. With the development of drives that support both blue and red lasers, interoperability between BD and DVD could be implemented, and compatibility between various manufacturer's reading/writing processes is currently undergoing verification. The BD format uses an AES 128 bit encryption protocol, an ultra-fine work process control, and including safety key control that can be used on both consumer products and PC products, we are working to make the synthetic contents system stable," said the companies trying to appeal with the technical predominance of BD. They are working to gain the support of each industry.
