They may have made your watch, but they also may help bring dual layer DVD recording o­ne step closer to your PC (or Mac).

Citizen Watch Corporation announced o­n the 8th that they have developed the world's first "DVD Dual Layer Recording Use Active Aberration Correction Element" (or what I call DVD-9 error correction). It supports dual layer recording of DVD-R and DVD+R discs.

This is an advancement to the single layer DVD recording "DVD Tilt Correction Element" already developed by Citizen, and was developed "because of the expansion of demand for dual-layer recording in the DVD recording market."

The independently developed correction element uses an ultra small optical liquid crystal panel combined with a liquid crystal driving IC, that can act as error correction for errors o­n the spherical surface that occur as a result of the change between single and dual layer recording. Since it uses current pickup assemblies, it "drastically reduces aberrations, and provides stable recording in a variety of disc fluctuations. We were able to keep the high compatibility with different players, too."

The company currently produces 1,000,000 "DVD Tilt Correction Elements" per month. The technology will be introduced with the spread of dual layer DVD recording, and production should be about 5,000,000 per month before the end of the year.
