JP Telecom (J:COM) has announced that they will launch the "J:COM MOBILE powered by WILLCOM" (J:COM MOBILE) PHS service that uses Willcom's lines on March 1st. They will begin accepting contracts in J:COM service areas from February 16th.
J:COM MOBILE is a PHS service targetted at users of "J:COM TV," J:COM's Cable TV service, "J:COM NET" internet service, or "J:COM PHONE" IP phone service. It uses Willcom's PHS lines, and a service identical to "Willcom Fixed Plan" (2,900 yen per month) is offered for 2,625 yen per month. Using 2 or more handsets makes it even cheaper, and it becomes 2,100 yen per month. Unlimited voice calls and email services between J:COM MOBILE users or between J:COM MOBILE and Willcom users is possible.
The handset that will be offered is Kyocera's "WX300K," and it features a "J:COM MOBILE powered by WILLCOM" logo. Pearl Ochre and Pearl Silver body colors will be available. These handsets will not be shipped to stores, but must be obtained from J:COM. The price of the handset is undecided, and the public relations department said "they should be about the same as the market price."
Also, special phone charge services will be offered, such as the new "Tokutoku Talk MOBILE" which allows for up to 125 free minotes of talk from J:COM MOBILE to J:COM PHONE. Members of J:COM PHONE's "Toku Toku Talk" can also use their free minutes for J:COM PHONE users (10,000 yen's worth per month) to J:COM MOBILE users.
J:COM MOBILE will offer Willcom's services under the J:COM brand, but the usage fees of add-on services will be requested on a single bill by J:COM. Detailed service contents are based on those of the "Willcom Fixed Plan," such as the necessary year-long contract, and an "excess charge" of 10.5 yen per 30 seconds for single calls that last over 2 hours and 45 minutes. A service to switch to J:COM MOBILE from Willcom will not be offered.
The goal of offering this service, according to their PR department, is that "other companies can do the three existing services. But adding this fourth service sets us apart." The company has J:COM PHONE IP phone users at its core, and wants to move towards FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence).
