Toshiba's "MUSIC-HDD W41T" is a clamshell handset that contains a 4GB hard drive, and is a CDMA 1X WIN handset. It is slated for release mid-February.

Its claim to fame is a 4GB hard drive, which has a diameter of 0.85 inches. The fact that the read/write head accesses the disk is the same as a hard drive used in a PC, but the hard drive of the W41T "is controlled by software so that it normally doesn't access the hard drive." This is to protect the unit from damage, because of the head touches the disk itself, there could be trouble, especially in a mobile phone environment.

au's new "au LISTEN MOBILE SERVICE" is supported, and the hard drive can save roughly 2,000 tracks (at 1.5MB each). The contents of the data folder, such as still images and videos, can also be backed up on the hard drive. When connected to a PC, 512MB of the drive's 4GB will be recognized as USB mass storage. The recharging cradle included in the package with the device connects via USB. When the cradle is connected to a PC and the phone is inserted in the cradle, the "au Music Port" software will launch.

Since a hard drive is fairly large compared to flash memory, the body size of the phone is 50 x 106 x 28mm, and it weighs 157g. The "electrostatic key" control interface (at the bottom part of the outside of the phone) allows for smooth operation of audio playback functions. The control involves tracing your finger across the keys, but to protect against accidental operation when inserted in a pocket, the right side of the phone has a slide-style lock key.

Bluetooth is also supported, and hands-free talk is possible when used with a supported headset. Music can also be enjoyed wirelessly with Yamaha's "NX-A01" speaker system and Kaga Electronics' "BTee Music" Bluetooth pendant-style earphones. The Bluetooth functions of these devices use an exclusive profile, available only on au handsets. The W41T's Bluetooth function can exchange data, addresses, schedules, images, and other data with PCs or the W21T, W31T, W32T, and W41T, which also support Bluetooth. Bluetooth direct printing is also supported if the printer is equipped with a Bluetooth unit.

The main display is a 2.4" QVGA (240 x 320 dot) TFT LCD which manages to display 262,144 colors. The subdisplay is a 160 x 33 dot monochrome LCD. The camera is equipped with a 3.23MP CCD camera and stereo speakers. The data folder size is 50MB. BREW 3.1 is supported with KCP (KDDI Common Platform). Flash 1.1 is supported so that the main menu is in Flash, and there are four preset designs available. New Flash menus can also be downloaded, and Toshiba's EZweb site will be offering these menus.

Mobile Rupo is used for character input, and "T4G" is the phone's 3D graphic engine. The "Ji Supa" dictionary is also preloaded. EZ Navi Walker (Input with Voice), Safety Navi, Hello Messenger, EZ Book, EZ FM, Chaku Uta Full, Pair Function, E-Mail Background Reception, and Keitai Update au services are supported. A barcode reader and writer BREW application is also preset.

The continous idle time is 280 hours, and continuous talk time 210 minutes. Feature Green, Beat Black, and Ambient White body colors will be available.
