I had no idea such technology existed until I read this article, but Hitachi has announced a new notebook PC that features the world's first "vein-recognition" device as a security measure. Vein-recognition apparently recognizes the veins in a person's finger, rather than the fingerprint itself, making it harder to falsify.
Hitachi Manufacturing Corporation will release the "FLORA Se210" mobile notebook PC intended for enterprise use on December 1st. It contains no hard drive and uses Windows XP Embedded, and Hitachi is marketing it as a "secure client solution" terminal.
In the lineup are the "FLORA Se210 Finger Vein-recognition Certification Internal Equipment model," which features a small device to verify a person's identity based on their vein pattern, and the "FLORA Se210" without such equipment. The price of the former is 194,250 yen, and the latter is 168,000 yen.
The FLORA Se210 uses a "finger vein recognition pattern" to verify a person's identity, said to be one of the fastest and hardest to falsify of the organic certification technologies. The pattern is extracted by exposing an LED light source to a finger that is placed on the sensor, which then diffuses light based on the veins of the user's finger. The actual vein pattern is stored on a "KeyMobile" USB key, so when a user wants their identity verified, they must match the two patterns.
Specifications besides the finger vein recognition equipment are largely the same, such as the Celeron 600MHz CPU, Intel 915GM chipset (onboard video), 256MB of memory, 1024 x 768 (XGA) 12.1" LCD display, and 512MB of flash memory (for the OS, not writable). Available interfaces are USB 2.0, Type2 PC card slot x 1, IEEE 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN, Gigabit Ethernet, and 56K modem.
The body size is 275 x 233 x 23~30.7mm (W x D x H), and it has a weight of 1.27kg. The battery of the vein recognition model will last about 2.1 hours, and that of the model without should last about 2.5 hours.
