In what seems to being happening a lot these days, IO Data has announced certain models of their recent shock-resistant hard drives ship preloaded with... a virus.

IO Data Device Corporation has announced that a virus has been shipped with their "HDP-U" series of portable hard dirve.

The three series that were subject to the error were the "HDP-U80," "HDP-U60," and "HDP-U40."

The virus on the drives is a Trojan-style virus, and goes by the name "WORM_TOMPAI.A" or "W32/Tompai-A."

Although not all of the products shipped with the virus, IO Data has not released the serial numbers of the devices that are affected; one can thus not determine whether or not their own product is affected.

To take care of the virus, IO Data has said that it will need to be removed using either the user's own anti-virus software, or a 30 day trial of "Virus Buster 2006 Internet Security."

Also, for those who so desire, the hard drives can be exchanged for new units after the virus has been removed.

The HDP-U series is a portable hard drive equipped with a silicon jacket, giving it a shock resistance so that it can withstand a drop from a height of 80cm.

Even though it is evident the drive can withstand impacts, the drive cannot be considered secure if it is equipped with a virus.

Doubts also remain about the serial numbers of target units. Previous incidents have made it clear that when troubles like these arise, all information at hand about the matter needs to be publicized to retain credibility. IO Data's failure to release the information questions the attitude of how IO Data deals with such trouble, as well as their product manufacturing controls -- serial numbers need to be publicized as soon as possible.

Those drives that already have had the virus removed feature a round blue seal on the packaging.

Update: A release was issued at 3PM on the 22nd, and the serial numbers of affected units have been announced. The serial numbers are on the hard drive itself. The "xx" at the end of the serial number can be any two alphanumeric characters.

HDP-U40: YBS0000001xx~YBS0005520xx
HDP-U60: YBT0000001xx~YBT000100xx
HDP-U80: YBV0000001xx~YBV0002480xx
