Toshiba has introduced flash memory models of their respected gigabeat audio players. 512MB and 1GB versions are available. Yay?
On the 14th, Toshiba added flash memory type models as new products in the "gigabeat" line of portable digital audio players. The 512MB "gigabeat P5" will be available in two models from early December, and the 1GB "gigabeat P10" is set for release in mid-December. The price on each model is Open Price, but the direct sale price on Toshiba's "Shop 1048" is 13,980 yen for the gigabeat P5, and 17,980 yen for the gigabeat P10.
The players feature color organic EL displays with a 50 gram thin body. They support the playback of MP3, WMA, and WAV files. Windows Media DRM is also supported, so that audio data purchased from electronic music distribution services can be played on the gigabeat; the units also feature direct recording and FM tuner functionality. Connecting the stereo line-in jack to a different audio device's stereo line-out jack allows for recording of audio to the player without use of a PC. Of course, FM broadcast recording is also supported.
The 1.1" organic EL display can show artist name, song name, and other such text-based information, and it can also display JPEG images (such as those recorded by a digital camera). The internal lithium ion battery can be recharged via USB. A full recharge allows for roughly 14 hours of continuous playback.
The 512MB "gigabeat P5" comes in two versions: the "Red Palette" which takes after the makeup palettes of women, and the "White Palette," which uses silver lining on a white body. The 1GB "gigabeat P10" will be available only in "Black Chrome." The external dimensions of either unit are 31.9 x 82 x 13.2mm (W x H x T). The weight of the P5 is around 49 grams, and the P10 around 50 grams.
