This sort of already happened with NEC's "SoundVu" feature (which uses NXT's technology), but Casio has announced a 2.5" LCD module that features an integrated speaker. Of course it's a tad different -- NXT's technology is all about vibrating the LCD itself (thus creating sound), while this Casio offering places a ceramic speaker behind the LCD.
Casio announced on the 29th that they have developed a small LCD module that has an integrated speaker. They have not decided on when production will begin, or how much samples will cost. They are aiming for production in 2006. Sample units will be on display at "CEATEC JAPAN 2005," set to be held from October 4th.
This is an LCD module that integrates a 2.5" TFT LCD display with a layered piezoelectric ceramic speaker, so it has both video display and audio playback functions. Casio supposes the module could be used in digital cameras, portable audio players, mobile phones, game devices, portable TVs, and so on.
A layered piezoelectric ceramic speaker involves holding piezoelectric ceramics with electrodes, and outputting sound by using the expansion and contraction of the piezoelectric ceramics that occurs when they are applied to the electrodes. There isn't really a need for a space to amplify the sound, enabling the speakers to be thinner than traditional speaker units. Also, because they do not use a magnet, there is no effect on a device's other components.
Two demo units will be on display: a monoaural type that has one speaker, and a stereo type that has two speakers. The monoaural type has an output of over 86dB, and the stereo type over 92dB.
The display portion is Casio's own HAST LCD. It has a resolution of 960 x 240 (Translator's note: both the source article and press release list this as being the resolution -- that's an awfully bizarre resolution, so methinks someone at Casio botched), and a thickness of 3.2mm.
