Audio/Video: Fuji Television starts video-on-demand service

Fuji Television will start an on-demand TV program delivery service for both PC and STB users from late July. Programs will initially be priced at between 210 and 525 yen each.



Fuji Television announced on 12 July that they will start offering their "Fuji Terebi On Demand" fee-based service for TV program delivery from late July. The service will be offered in conjunction with ISPs such as Yahoo! BB, OCN BIGLOBE and delivered programs will initially cost between 210 and 525 yen.

The first feature program to be delivered will be the final series of the 2005 Women's Volleyball World Grand Prix in late July. All 15 matches of the final series will be delivered for a cost of 525 yen. From August, Masayoshi Yamazaki's 10th anniversary concert tour will also be offered at a cost of 525 yen.

Program such as "Puramo Tsukurou" (Let's make plastic models), "Minna no tetsudou" (Everyone's railway) and "Shuukan Shonen" (Weekly Youth) from Fuji Television's "Fuji Terebi 721/739 CS channels will be delivered from August at a cost of 210 yen per episode. The number of programs available will be progressively increased.

Partners for the service include OCN, So-net, BIGLOBE, Yahoo! BB, BBTV, AII, ShowTime, Skyperfect! BB, OCN Theater, OnDemand TV, KDDI HikariPlus TV, Jupiter VOD and 4th MEDIA (@nifty, BIGLOBE, hi-ho, Plala, So-net) but more are planned to be added.

Viewing of the service will only be possible from within Japan. The on-demand programs will be delivered via streaming and digital recording will not be possible (editor: good luck!). Payments will be made via one of the partner ISPs or content providers.

The PC service will have two available bitrates of 500kbps and 1.5Mbps. The STB service will have bitrates of 3-6Mbps.
