Canon has updated a couple of scanners in their product range. The higher-spec CanoScan 5400F uses Canon's proprietary "Diamond Pixel" and "HyperCCD IIex." technology to deliver scans up to 2400 x 4800 dpi. The CanoScan LiDE 60 is a standard model that uses Canon's LiDE technology to produce scans up to 1200 x 2400 dpi.

Canon will begin sales of a two new USB2.0 A4 flatbed scanners from 21 July. The scanners will have no recommended retail price but are expected to sell for 16,000 yen (CanoScan 5400F) and 12,000 yen (CanoScan LiDE 60).

Supported operating systems are Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OSX 10.2 or later. Under Windows 98/Me and Mac OSX 10.2.7 or less, only USB1.1 transfers are supported.

The bundled software for both scanners includes "File Kanri Kakumei Lite" file management software (Windows only), "Yomitori Kakumei Lite" OCR software and "PhotoStudio" image editing software.

The CanoScan 5400F is an updated version of the CanoScan 5200F released in May 2004. In addition to using Canon's "HyperCCD IIex." 6-line colour CCD with hexagonal "Diamond Pixel" technology, the 5400F is also newly equipped with Canon's proprietary "FARE Level3" image processing technology. A "Backlight correction" function also allows film images taken with backlighting to be corrected to natural hues.

The 5400F has an optical resolution of 2400 x 4800 dpi and can accept a maximum paper size of 216 x 297 mm. A transparency unit is a standard option and 35mm film can be scanned (6 unmounted negatives or 4 mounted slides). The scanner is 285 x 512 x 112 mm in size and weighs approximately 4.1 kg.

The Canoscan LiDE 60 is a standard model that incorporates Canon's proprietary LIDE (LED InDirect Exposure) CIS (Contact Image Sensor). The bus-powered scanner does not require an AC adapter and also comes with a stand to allow it to be stored and used vertically.

The LiDE 60 has an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi and a maximum paper size of 216 x 297 mm. It scans at 16bit/colour and outputs in either 8 or 16 bit colour. Scanning speed is 12.7ms/line in colour and 4.2ms/line in black and white at 1200 dpi.
