If flash memory isn't enough for your data, consider looking at IO Data's new "HDMX-SU" series of portable hard drives. They're not much bigger than a business card case, are pretty hot looking, and go up to 40GB capacities.

IO Data Device Corporation will release the business card case-sized portable hard drive series, the "HDMX-SU," beginning in late July.

The Simple Model of the 20GB offering, the "HDMX-SU20FN," is 16,485 yen, the Full Package Model "HDMX-SU20F" 18,690 yen, and the 40GB "HDMX-SU40" is 25,515 yen. Supported operating systems are Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Mac OS 9.1.x ~ 9.2.x, and Mac OS X 10.1 ~ 10.4.

This is a portable hard drive containing a 1.8 inch drive. The dimensions of the 20GB model are 62 x 102 x 9.8mm (W x D x H), and it weighs roughly 90g; the 40GB model is 62 x 102 x 12.8mm (same), and weighs about 103g. The feature of these units is thus their size. They operate off of bus powered, and can power on and off when the PC they are connected to powers on or off.

A function button is featured on the body of the units, and with the use of the included "Pochittona" software, pushing this function button after connecting the drive will cause its folder to open, holding it down for roughly two seconds will allow for safe removal, and a double-click push of the button will conduct an automatic backup.

The Full Package Model includes IO Data's own security function "iSPIS" 256bit encryption software, "Encrypt Folder," "e-check V3" data partition software," a 10cm USB cable, carrying pouch, changeable stickers, and protective sticker. The "changeable" sticker can be peeled off, but re-using them isn't really an option. Sticks currently on the market can be used if they are cut to 86 x 54mm.

Included accessories with all three models are a 50cm USB cable, "HDD Lock" with iSPIS, "EasySaver LE" automatic backup software, and "DiskRefresher LE" data deletion software.
