DoCoMo wastes no time bringing out the new technology, so they're already well into working o­n 4G (fourth-generation) transmission standards for the next generation of mobile phones.

The latest test was conducted outdoors, where DoCoMo has successfully pulled 1Gbps.

NTT DoCoMo, who is working towards the development of fourth-generation (4G) mobile phone systems, after acquiring a license to conduct outdoors tests, has successfully pulled a maximum 1Gbps downstream signal.

This experiment represents a step towards successful application of 4G systems. Though the technologies to be used in 4G itself have not yet been standardized, NTT is already conducting 4G tests, and successfully pulled a 1Gbps downstream in indoor tests in December of last year.

The transmission standards used in this experiment, like the indoors experiment, are "VSF-Spread OFDM (Variable Scattering Factor - Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple)," is can be flexibly adapted to various transmission environments, and "MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output)," which transmits multiple signals using multiple antennas o­n the same frequency. DoCoMo explained, "the point is, we got the experimental license, and the outdoors experiment was a success."

During this experiment, the frequency utilization ratio was about 10bps/Hz, which when compared to FOMA, represents about 20 times the efficiency during peak times.
